We would really like to live more green by saving energy and lowering our utilites, services bills
any good ideas yahoo? What utilities can my parents 'cut down' on?
Many electric companies will have someone come out (usually free of charge) to check the home for areas where air is leaking from. By making sure all duct-work, windows and doors are sealing properly you can save on your electric bill. Some electric companies will even give discounts for energy star type residences.
Check the caulk around doors and windows and replace as necessary. Make sure the insulation in the home is ample. Keep the thermostat set on the same temperature throughout the summer (and do the same in the winter). Use those new light bulbs. Turn lights and appliances off when not in use and unplug things like coffee pots, electric toothbrushes, hair dryers and computers when not in use. If possible, turn down the temperature on the water heater. If there are rooms in the house that aren't used much, close the registers in those rooms. Keep the blinds and curtain closed on windows where the sun shines through for the longest period of time (or during the heat of the day). Collect rain water in barrels to be used to water gardens and lawns and to wash the car. Don't let the water run while brushing your teeth and make your showers short. Eliminate baths altogether as that uses more water than showering.
Hope this helps! What utilities can my parents 'cut down' on?
just adjusting the thermostat a couple degrees warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter can save a bunch on the electric and heating bills.
btw: those new light bulbs do not last as long as advertised, not by a long shot and contain mercury....making their disposal problematic. While one may save on electricity, there is the great danger of contaminating the ground water.
Change traditional light bulbs with new effeciency light bulbs. They are more expensive but last up to 8 years!! They are especially great in places where you need a light bulb but it is hard to reach and change.
Water- Don't let it just run from the faucet without using every drop.
