If money is not the issue, then, I would reccommend a campus tour with your parents. Make and appointment to speak with the resident hall director.
If money is an issue, stay at home for the first year, take loans out to pay for resident hall the second year. Then apply for an RA (resident advisor) position. You will receive free room and board as an RA. The second option is what I did. Living in the dorms was the best expereince of my life. I still have freinds from then, and I met my husband of 25 years there. How do I convince my parents to let me live in res?
Congratulations, study hard and have fun!

lie and say its required for a grant program or a jobs program and then applyfor one so its true my daughter was required for her grants to stay there a year
Depends on who is paying for your education? If they are, then stay at home for the first year, then decide about res the second year.
